U.S. IMMUNIZATION NEWS
"Keeping an Eye on Kids" Sarasota Herald-Tribune Online (www.herald-trib.com) (06/30/02) P. F1; Smith, Barbara Peters
The welfare of children is uppermost in the minds of the citizens of Sarasota County, with many community-based organizations focusing on the advocacy and care of children. Immunization levels are one of the first indicators of how well a community nurtures its children say child advocates, and Sarasota County maintains a higher than 90 percent level. But Sarah Gorman, executive director of the Healthy Start Coalition of Sarasota County, says children's well-being needs to extend well beyond just baseline immunizations into long-term pediatric care, the building of parent-physician relationships, and prevention of abuse and neglect. Even beyond disease and neglect prevention, county officials say a declining level of physical fitness is adding obesity, which increases the risk of heart disease and diabetes, to the list of children's issues.
